('Max' Aitken, 1879–1964, kt 1911, baron Beaverbrook 1917) Newspaper proprietor and politician. Born in Canada, son of a Scottish Presbyterian minister, he had made a fortune in business before he came to Britain in 1910. He was elected a Unionist MP that same year, for Ashton-under-Lyne. He bought the Daily *Express in 1916, launched the Sunday Express in 1918 and acquired the Evening *Standard in 1923. His papers were known for their popular crusading journalism, the most consistent crusade being support for the empire. He was brilliantly effective as minister in charge of aircraft production in 1940–1, a period which included the *Battle of Britain.
