Whipsnade
|
|
(Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, 19km/12m NW of St Albans) Open zoo where the uncaged conservation of wild animals and the breeding in captivity of endangered species was pioneered from 1931 by the Zoological Society, as an extension of their activities at *London Zoo. The original purpose was scientific, but with the development of *safari parks elsewhere the freedom of the public to move among the animals has steadily increased; the African animals can even be viewed from a narrow-gauge steam train which itself derives from Africa.
