A tavern in London (it stood in Bread Street), which was frequented by *Shakespeare, Ben *Jonson, John *Donne and other poets. It was destroyed in the *Great Fire. The name was revived for the Mermaid Theatre, which opened in 1959 as the first new theatre in the *City since the time of those celebrated writers.
