(1907–63) Northern Irish poet, linked with *Auden and *Spender in the 1930s though less political than them; his Autumn Journal (1939) is a personal poetic diary of the events up to and surrounding *Munich. He was an accomplished writer of radio documentaries and plays, notably The Dark Tower (published with other radio scripts under that title in 1947). His best-known single poem is probably *Bagpipe Music.
