The Kangxi emperor foresees trouble when he discovers that there are Europeans 'wandering at will over China':
'With so many westerners coming to China it has been hard to distinguish the real missionaries from other white men pretending to be missionaries but being in fact mere meddlers, out for profit, greedy traders, who should not be allowed to live here. I fear that some time in the future China is going to get into difficulties with these various western countries. That is my prediction.'
