In a Danish mystery play of the 16th century, the executioner announces to St Dorothy (who has already been whipped, burnt and stretched with tongs):

'I shall now hang you by your feet, And with the strongest rope you tie To twist your arms and legs a-wry. And stifle your mouth from all breath, And finally torture you to death.'
