congenial place

René Descartes, writing to a friend in Italy in 1631, describes the attractions of Amsterdam:

'What other place in the world would one choose, where all the commodities of life and all the curiosities to be desired are as easy to come by as here? What other land, where one could enjoy such a complete freedom?'

Quoted Christopher Brown Scenes of Everyday Life, Dutch Genre Painting of the Seventeenth Century, Faber 1984, page 56
