The Zinoviev letter: 1924

Four days before the general election of 1924 the Daily Mail publishes a letter supposedly written by Grigori Zinoviev, a close colleague of Lenin's and the head of the Communist International (or Comintern). It is addressed to the British Communist party and gives advice on how to organize subversive activities in preparation for the revolution.

The letter is almost certainly a forgery, but it serves its purpose. The British electorate, already alarmed by a Labour coalition government which it considers soft on Communism, brings the Conservatives back into power with a large majority.
