Ramayana

The Ramayana or 'Romance of Rama' tells the story of a prince, Rama, whose father is king of Ayodhya (the modern Oudh). He is a perfect man. By a feat of strength he wins the hand of Sita, a perfect wife. The epic tells of the many difficulties put in their way by enemies, complicated by endless unjustified doubts as to Sita's chastity.

In the central strand of the story the chief enemy is Ravana, a demon king who kidnaps Sita and carries her off to Sri Lanka. With much help from the king of the monkeys and his intelligent monkey-general, Hanuman, Sita is rescued and is reunited with Rama.
