Yin and yang

In the original meanings of the words, yin is the dark side of a hill and yang the sunny side. In Chinese symbolism, the alternation between yin and yang is the natural rhythm of life.

Yang is selected as the male principle. Once having established themselves on the sunny side of the hill, the gentlemen claim by analogy light, heat, activity, life, cleanliness, the sun, day, delight, China and civilization. Yin, the feminine side, is left with darkness, cold, passivity, death, dirt, the moon, the night, melancholy, foreign people and barbarism. Unfair though the distribution is, the famous Chinese diagram of yin and yang makes plain that both sides are indispensable to the process of existence.
