promise made

In a Buddhist sutra a monk named Dharmakara, living long ago, is said to have achieved by now his final enlightenment as Buddha. This validates a heart-warming promise which he made in that distant life. When he is Buddha, he said, he will go to a pure land. Anyone who adores him can join him there. In the words of his promise:

'If, after my obtaining Buddhahood, all beings in the ten quarters, who desire in sincerity to be born into by Buddha country, cannot be born there by adoring me ten times, may I not take the enlightenment.'

Quoted Encylopaedia Britannica 1972, i, page 793
