ancient ruins of Rome

An author, writing in about 1400, compares the present decay of Rome with the glory of its past:

'The beauty of Rome is what lies in ruins. The men of the present day, who call themselves Romans, are very different in bearing and conduct from the ancient inhabitants. To put it bluntly, they all look like cowherds.'

Quoted R.J. Mitchell The Laurels and the Tiara, 1962, page 174
