The Trojan War

The Greek story of the Trojan War probably derives from folk memories of real events in the Mycenaean period. But in its legendary form it is a basic story of love and revenge.

Paris, a prince of Troy, has abducted Helen, the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta. Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and brother of Menelaus, gathers together a great Greek army which sails across the Aegean to Troy to avenge the crime. They besiege the city for ten years before finally destroying it and carrying Helen back to Greece. The main heroes on each side are Achilles and Hector, both of whom die in the war. The wrath of Achilles and the death of Hector are central themes in the Iliad.
