Places in History is an ongoing project, involving local history societies. It uses placemarks in Google Maps to identify the exact position of a building, street or other feature, with a satellite view of the location. The maps link to pages in HistoryWorld for historical details and images, and to timelines in TimeSearch for a broader range of data.

Ham and Petersham – Cassel Hospital

1763 - Elliot Bishop buys the 8-acre estate in the south east corner of Ham Common (the site of the future Cassel Hospital), consisting two houses, one a 17th century farmhouse and the other a substantial ‘messuage with two coach houses’. The estate then changes hands no fewer than eight times within 100 years.

1862 - The future Cassel Hospital estate, now with a single mansion, is leased for nine years to HRH Robert Philippe, Duc de Chartres, exiled from France along with his grandfather, King Louis Philippe

1879 - The future Cassel Hospital buildings are occupied by West Heath School for young ladies – some of its classes being attended by Princess May (the future Queen Mary), while living at White Lodge, Richmond Park.

1947 - The Cassel Foundation (founded by Sir Ernest Cassel, grandfather of the Countess Mountbatten) establishes the Cassel Hospital for functional nervous disorders at Ham Common.
