In addition to the Asclepian shrines, local healing cults flourished throughout Greece. This relief is from the shrine of Amphiaraos at Oropos on the east coast not far from Athens. Amphiaraos (left) is treating the right shoulder of a young man. The patient is represented again, at the back, asleep on a bed while a sacred serpent (also identified with Asclepius) glides over his shoulder.
