By the 1960s, the locked ‘DDA' (Dangerous Drugs Act) trolley and the ‘medicine round' had become a symbol of the hospital ward. The ward sister, accompanied by a junior nurse, dispenses each patient's dosage according to a doctor's prescription. The nurse also witnesses that the dose is dispensed correctly. The unlocked trolley is never left unguarded.
