The man in bed is treated with a decoction of guaiacum wood which is being chopped and prepared in the kitchen. A picture on his bedroom wall serves as a reminder of the promiscuous behaviour which caused his downfall. In reality, it is unlikely that such a large supply of guaiacum would have been readily available.
