The hospice movement developed the concept of a ‘good' death - one which would be peaceful and pain-free, albeit within a hospital environment. When hospices began to include substantial and prolonged doses of morphine in their pain control regimen, some doctors expressed concern over addiction. It was eventually appreciated that, in terminal illness, this was largely irrelevant.
