Carew Cross

The Carew Cross is a magnificent eleventh-century decorated cross, which appears to have been erected to commemorate Maredudd ap Edwin or to celebrate his kingship - he ruled Deheubarth (south-west Wales) with his brother Hywel between 1033 and 1035. The cross is 4.3m (13 feet) high and the faces are richly carved with panels of geometric or interwoven patterns.

The Carew Cross provides the inspiration for the symbol of Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments.
