Photographs of Victorian Prisoners from Oxford Gaol, 1870-1881 This album shows individual photographs of prisoners in Oxford Gaol. The inclusion of photographs in prison records at this early date is very rare.

The man shown at the top right hand side is William James aged 78, who was sentenced to two months imprisonment in 1871 for stealing a watch.

The child convict is Julia Ann Crumpling, aged 7, who was sentenced to seven days' hard labour for stealing a perambulator in 1870.
