On 23rd June 1842, The Duke and Duchess of Bucchleuch gave a fete in honour of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, the King and Queen of the Belgians and other members of the Royal Family at Buccleuch House. Before entering the Lower Road, the Royal party passed through a Triumphal Arch of vast proportions formed of flowering shrubs surmounted by the words "God Bless the Queen and Prince Albert" with "Prince of Wales" on the right and "Princess Royal" on the left.
