Treaty of Rome, 1972 This is the treaty by which the United Kingdom joined the European Economic Community and European Atomic Energy Community along with Denmark and Ireland. It was signed in January 1972 - not in Rome but in Brussels.

The Prime Minister, Edward Heath, made an enthusiastic broadcast to the nation about the benefits of accession: 'We have the chance of new greatness. Now we must take it'. Public reaction was rather more guarded.
