Treaty of Amity with the USA signed by George Washington, 1794 The loss of the American colonies during the American War of Independence (1775-83) had severely shaken Britain's confidence. However, trade with the newly independent United States of America grew. This trading relationship between Britain and her former colony was formalised in 1794 by the Treaty of Amity.
