(1892–1973, kt 1942) Scottish physicist who from 1935 developed the system of radar used in wartime Britain; with a network of radar stations in place along the south coast by 1939, his work was a vital part of the defence against German air attack. Similar systems were being developed at the same time in the USA, France and Germany.
