Francis Towne
|
|
(1739–1816) Watercolourist who lived almost his entire life in his native Exeter. In 1777 he toured Wales in search of the sublime. In 1780-81 he was abroad in Switzerland and Italy. And in 1786 he visited the English Lake District. He depicted all these varieties of scenery in a style entirely his own, with the structure of the landscape often suggested in simple blocks of washed colour. As a provincial artist, Towne's work attracted little attention in his own time and was soon forgotten after his death. He was not rediscovered as a painter of significance until the 20th century, when his originality brought him high regard.
