Simeon Solomon

(1840–1905) Talented painter in the *Pre-Rapahelite style. Influenced first by Dante Gabriel *Rossetti, his early paintings are of Old Testament subjects reflecting the spirituality of his Jewish background. From the mid-1860s he was more influenced by *Burne-Jones and changed his subject matter to classical youths and maidens. The last four decades of his life were unmitigated disaster. Openly homosexual, he was arrested in 1873 for gross indecency in a public lavatory. He died a pauper and an acoholic.
