Jan Siberechts
|
|
(1627–1703) Flemish landscape painter who came to England frorm Antwerp in 1674 and pioneered the style of high-angle bird's-eye view which could display in impressive detail the mansion, garden and receding estate of a rich patron. The precision of Siberechts and his followers was ideally suited to the prevailing fashion for geometrical patterns in *landscape gardening. The aerial perspective meant that the patron's carriages and retainers could also be prominently displayed in the foreground without blocking the view of the mansion.
