Alfred Waterhouse
|
|
(1830–1905) Architect who began his career with an early success in a competion – for the assize courts in Manchester in 1859. He followed this by winning another competition (1868), this time for the *Manchester town hall, his most imposing work in the Gothic style. Unusually for him, he turned to a version of the Romanesque for an equally impressive building in London, the *Natural History Museum.
