Canaletto

|
(Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) The leading Venetian painter of city views. His best patrons were English collectors, many of whom had visited Venice on the *Grand Tour. From 1746–55 he spent most of his time in England, supplying the same patrons with local views, particularly of river scenes in London and of their own stately homes. More than 200 of his paintings (representing more than half his total output) are in British collections.
