Perkin Warbeck
|
|
(c.1474–99) Pretender who was trained up by Yorkist opponents of *Henry VII, and in particular by Margaret, sister of *Edward IV, to impersonate the younger of the *princes in the Tower. If alive, and if his elder brother was dead, this prince was the rightful king of England as Richard IV. From 1492 Warbeck was at different times supported in his assumed role by *Charles VIII (the king of France), by *Maximilian (Holy Roman Emperor) and by *James IV of Scotland – who in 1495 even gave him his cousin, Catherine Gordon, in marriage. Warbeck made various feeble attempts to invade England and was finally captured in Hampshire in 1497. His life was spared until further plots made his execution a necessary precaution.
