(1632–1723, kt 1673) English architect, designer of *St Paul's Cathedral and of some 50 other London churches after the *Great Fire of 1666. His early career was as an astronomer, and he was a founder member of the *Royal Society. His first major architectural commission was in 1663 for the Sheldonian Theatre at *Oxford, where he had been Savilian professor of astronomy since 1661. He carried on the classicism introduced to English architecture by Inigo *Jones and added to it elements of the *baroque style which was well established in Europe. His secular buildings include *Chelsea Hospital, the *Royal Naval College and *Hampton Court. He is buried in St Paul's.
