BBC World Service
|
|
Originally the name for the English-language programmes broadcast around the world from 1932 by the *BBC, but extended in 1988 to include also the 35 foreign-language channels (previously called the External Services); together they amount to the entire output from *Bush House, with an estimated global audience of 120 million. The importance of these transmissions and of the BBC's reputation for impartiality became evident in World War II and has hardly lessened since; there was therefore considerable opposition in the early 1980s when the government proposed pruning the World Service (it is funded by the Foreign Office).
