Sydney Wooderson
|
|
(b. 1914) Shining hero to any schoolboy in mid-20C Britain, as the man who defeated the mighty Czech athlete Emil Zatopek to win the 5000 metres in the 1946 European Championships. In the years before World War II Wooderson held several world records, including the 800 metres, half mile and mile. His 1945 mile record of 4:4.2 lasted until replaced by Roger Bannister's 4-minute mile (3.59.4) run at Oxford on 6 May 1954.
