Wombles
|
|
Creatures with long snouts and eccentric clothes who live underground, originally under Wimbledon Common in London. Created by Elizabeth Beresford, they made their first appearance in a book for children (The Wombles 1968) and went on to become extremely popular in animated form on television. They were environment-friendly ahead of their time, for their night-time hobby is collecting and making imaginative use of the rubbish left by humans.
