The Wash
|
|
Shallow bay in the North Sea between Lincolnshire and Norfolk. It is being gradually filled by silt from the rivers Witham, Welland, Nene and Great Ouse, a process which in the past has created the *Fens. King *John, campaigning here in 1216, lost all his baggage and some of his men when crossing the tidal estuary of the Welland – making possible a favourite joke in English school history, that King John lost all his things in the wash.
