The Woman in White
|
|
(1860) Tale of suspense and melodrama by Wilkie *Collins, published as a serial in All the Year Round from 1859. There are two women in white, each in turn the wife of an evil baronet (in fact an impostor) who confines them in a lunatic asylum. The young second wife, Laura Fairlie, is rescued by her half-sister, Marian Halcombe. The narrator, Walter Hartright, marries Laura after her husband has burnt to death while trying to destroy the evidence of his own illegitimacy.
