Wapping

|
(London E1) The western part of *Docklands, closest to the *City of London and the first part of the development to be occupied. The *Times and other Murdoch newspapers moved there in 1986 and were printed on new machinery manned by members of the electricians' union, the EETPU. Security measures installed against the traditional print unions, who had been excluded from the plant, caused the area to be known as Fortress Wapping. Violent clashes between pickets and police in January 1987 led to many arrests and, two years later, to more than 20 police being charged with offences committed during the disturbance. But the failure of the print unions to disrupt the operation put an effective end to their previously great power.
