Wollaton Hall
|
|
(4km/2.5m W of Nottingham) The most spectacularly ornate and self-important of Elizabethan houses, built in 1580–88 by Robert *Smythson for Sir Francis Willoughby. It inspired an equally grandiose Victorian building, *Mentmore Towers. Wollaton Hall now houses Nottingham's museum of natural history.
