(1903–44) The most successful British commander of guerrilla forces in World War II, first in Ethiopia and then in Burma, where he led his famous *'Chindits' in lengthy missions behind the Japanese lines – a form of campaign made possible by long-range radio communication and the dropping of supplies by air. In 1944 he was put in command of the reconquest of Burma. He died in an unexplained air crash in the jungle.
