window tax
|
|
First levied in 1695 on the number of windows in a house, and finally abolished in 1851 as a result of Lord *Shaftesbury's campaign for improved standards of sanitation in lodging houses. Many old houses in Britain can still be seen with windows bricked up to save the tax.
