William
|
|
(William Brown) Irrepressible 11-year-old schoolboy hero of short stories by Richmal *Crompton. At constant odds with adult intentions, William slips away from his middle-class parents on every possible occasion to join the Outlaws, of whom he is the leader. The others are Henry, Douglas and Ginger, but they find it impossible to rid themselves of an intruder, Violet Elizabeth Bott (a new arrival in the village and much despised because her very rich father has made his money too recently and by means of Bott's Digestive Sauce). The characters first appeared in book form in Just – William (1922) and continued unchanged for some 350 stories up to the end of the author's life. Their illustrator was Thomas Henry (Thomas Henry Fisher, 1879–1962).
