Wigan

(86,000 in 1991) Town in greater Manchester, with a history dating back to Roman and Anglo-Saxon times but in recent centuries associated with coal mining and the cotton industry. In the 19C it was the original home of *Beecham's pill, and its name has a particular modern resonance through featuring in Orwell's title, The *Road to Wigan Pier.
