Whithorn

(1000 in 1991) Town in Dumfries and Galloway which was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. It was believed to be the 'white house' (huit aern in Old English) of St *Ninian. There are remains of a 12–13C priory. On the coast, at Isle of Whithorn, is a 14C ruin called St Ninian's Chapel – probably built to welcome pilgrims arriving by sea.
