While shepherds watched their flocks by night

Hymn by Nahum Tate (1652–1715), which is now also popular as a *carol. It was originally sung to a traditional tune (the one used today for God rest you merry, gentlemen), but this has long been replaced by the present one, known as 'Winchester Old', which was published in a metrical psalter of 1592.
