(1890–1976, kt 1952) Archaeologist who with his wife, Tessa, excavated between the wars several Roman sites in Britain and the great Iron Age fort of *Maiden Castle. Their working partnership ended with her death in 1936. He became Britain's best-known archaeologist, to the broader public, through his regular appearances in the 1950s on the television panel game Animal, Vegetable and Mineral.
