Members of the Conservative party in parliament during the 1980s who did not agree with Mrs *Thatcher's right-wing policies, particularly *monetarism. The term, later adopted by the wets themselves as a name to be proud of, was the prime minister's favourite adjective for anyone who held less absolute views than herself. Such a person would also be described as 'not one of us'.
