(32km/20m SE of Oxford) House of the early 18C, remodelled from 1739 to 1781 in a variety of contemporary styles. It has baroque, Palladian, rococo and neoclassical elements, and the temples in the park include early examples of the Greek Revival. The owner, following his own whims in these matters, was Sir Francis Dashwood (1708–81). He is known also as a leading member of the *Hellfire Club, which is believed to have met for its rituals in the caves to the north of the park.
