Westonbirt Arboretum

(29km/18m N of Bath) Britain's finest collection of trees and shrubs, with some 17,000 specimens from all round the world, started in 1829 by Robert Holford and continued after his death by his son, Sir George. Since 1965 it has been maintained by the *Forestry Commission. Robert Holford also built Westonbirt House, one of the most magnificent of Victorian mansions, which has been a girls' school since 1928.
