Westminster School
|
|
Boys' *public school, with ancient buildings behind *Westminster Abbey. There was a school here from at least the 12C, run by the abbey's *Benedictine monks (their successors are still a teaching community, at *Ampleforth). At the *Reformation Westminster was re-established as a Protestant school and its new foundation is taken as dating from 1560, when *Elizabeth I gave it her royal patronage. Girls are now admitted for the last two years, in the sixth form.
