Senior Roman Catholic prelate in England and Wales and president of the church's governing body, the Bishop's Conference. The see was created in 1850, with Cardinal *Wiseman as the first archbishop, when *Pius IX decided to restore a diocesan hierarchy in Britain in response to an increasing population of *Roman Catholics and a gradual easing of restrictions, as seen on the political front in the *Emancipation Act of 1829. The archiepiscopal seat is *Westminster Cathedral.
